The Campus Network
The Bard network features a Gigabit backbone with 100MB desktop speeds that link College facilities and give students, faculty, and staff access to Internet services, e-mail, and the World Wide Web from classrooms, residence hall rooms, offices, and public areas. Bard provides high-speed ethernet access to the Internet and campus computing resources via fiber-optic cabling to all student residence halls and 802.11b(g) wireless networking in several areas around the campus including the Stevenson Library, Henderson Technology Lab, Ottaway Gatehouse, Fisher Studio Arts Building, Hegeman Hall, Albee Hall, Rose Hall, Bertelsmann Campus Center, the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, and Ward Manor Cafe; also: Tewksbury Hall, Robbins, Bartlett, Sawkill, Keen Basement, Sycamore, Spruce, Maple, and Mulberry (residence halls). Bard exploits the benefits of shared instructional technology, via global communication networks and the Internet. The prime example of this is the Bard-Smolny Virtual Campus project, which, using real-time videoconferencing, links students and faculty at Bard with colleagues at the Smolny College of the Russian State University of Saint Petersburg. This state-of-the-art technology reinforces curricular exchange and is a vital component in educational collaboration at an international level.
